How to Get Your Music Out There

Collision Drumsticks - 5BR

By: Soul Kerr

My name is Soul Kerr, and I am a drummer of 15 years. I currently play in a metal band called Anever based in the bay area of California. Musical performance is my passion, and I have been doing it actively for the last four years. There are hundreds of little pieces of information I have come across that give me an overall understanding of how the music industry works. As an independent artist, getting your music to be heard by mass audiences can be difficult, but achievable with the right mindset and focus, and there are a couple things I think are particularly important to keep in mind.

TIP #1

The first thing you need to make sure of is that your recorded music sounds good, and is available EVERYWHERE. Online tools such as CD Baby and Distro Kid are helpful, distributing your tracks on every online retailer for a package price. The idea here is that if your band’s page come across a person’s social media, or they hear about you through a friend, that is a big opportunity for you to catch the attention of a new fan! People have short attention spans today with social media making it possible to check out a song within seconds of hearing about it. Because of this, you have to make sure that your material is not only easy to find, but high quality and well written so it catches their attention!

TIP #2

Once you have music online, the second thing you need is a strong and capable team of people to make up your band and play great shows. If you are a solo artist, the same concept applies. Every person involved in your project needs to be 100% focused and holding down their department, to make sure that opportunities can be grabbed as soon as they come. For example, touring is one of the best ways to get your music to stick in people’s minds, because they get to meet you and watch you play.

Imagine getting an offer to tour with a big band that will help you play in front of large crowds, and the band goes out and gives sloppy performances. This will not only hurt the artist’s reputation, but it is normally very difficult to come back from. First impressions are paramount, and everyone in the project should keep in mind that the band’s opportunity to blow could show up at any moment, and everyone should be ready when it does!

TIP #3

The last thing I would recommend, as an artist who wants to get his or her own music out there and be heard by the world, is to bring something unique to the table. It can seem like a difficult task to figure out what this X factor is, but it isn’t. The thing I want you to realize as aspiring artists, is that you will find it along the way if you do it the way YOU want to. Music brings joy to people in many different ways, and helps them express emotion. This cannot be fabricated. The only way you should write music is for yourself.

Nobody else has the ability the write music exactly the way you would, and if you try it out, you might stumble upon some gold. For instance, look at legendary artists like Korn, Slipknot, Godsmack, Slayer, or Lamb Of God, just to name a few. None of them could have known that their music would strike a cord with an entire generation of people. There is no way anyone can know that for sure. The only thing they all did the same way is that they wrote it the way they wanted to, without being worried what others would think. Music comes from your heart and soul and you are the only one who can do it your way.

I expect I will be playing music for the rest of my life, and this is the way I choose to do it. I hope this has been in some way helpful to all of you reading this, and I wish you all the best of luck in your endeavors!
